Learning Goal: Students will learn the warning signs of addiction, the consequences of abuse, and identify local resources available as a means to dealing with addiction within the community.
Activity #1: Class Discussion - Concept of Addiction
Activity #2: Brainstorm Session
In pairs, you are going to brainstorm substances and behaviours one can become addicted to. Make sure you write down your findings. You will have 10 minutes to put together your substance and behaviour list. We will then divide the whiteboard into Substance/Behaviour and each group will be asked to list at least 2 suggestions in an effort to contribute to the class discussion.
Activity #3: Warning Signs of Addiction
Using the iPads, phones, or other available technology, you will conduct some research to identity multiple warning signs of addictions. Your list must have at least 10 warning signs.
Activity #4: Creating a Skit - When Confronted About Addiction
Now it is time to understand how a person might act when they are confronted about their substance or behaviour addiction. In groups of 3, you will write a short 2-3 minute skit about a teenager who has an addiction. Each group will be given a different addiction and one of the following reactions to include in their skit, to show how individuals behave when confronted;
- deny
- minimize
- blame
- give excuses and rationalizations
- divert
- become angry
